Indeed, Sándor Kincses was a surprise inclusion in this team for me. It seems that this was the closest Kincses ever got to international recognition. A midfielder of some sort, I think, for Ferencváros.

Please also note that contrary to the report above, there was no yellow card issued to Pál Fischer. The report on italia1990.com is based upon watching the full game on tape.

I have written an extensive match report and analysis of this match on my website. I would be thankful for any feedback. Again, thanks for your help, HSV.

  3. Köszönöm szépen, Zsorzsinju. So we are looking for 3 players from the 6 that you mention there.

I can only guess that István Gulyás probably was one of them, since he was second-choice goalkeeper (with shirt #16) in the previous qualifiers, against Ireland and Northern Ireland. As for the two remaining players . . . maybe one defender (Simon) and one midfielder (Duró)? Or maybe Bicskei picked one extra striker on the bench (Jován or Lovász) in addition to Imre Boda? Difficult so say! But I am thankful that I now at least have some names.

    Here is what I know: 1. P. Disztl – 2. Sallai, 3. Pintér, 6. Z. Bognár, 3. Keller – 4. Róth, 7. Gy. Bognár, 10. Détári, 11. Vincze – 9. K. Kovács, 7. Kiprich. Substitutes: 12. Kozma, 13. ?, 14. ?, 15. Boda, 16. ?.
  4. Fantastic, thank you very much! This gives me a lot of background information about the match. I understand that Bicskei wanted to field against Spain the same team that had beaten Northern Ireland in September, but that many key players were injured before the match (Sass, E. Kovács, Fischer, Limperger, L. Disztl!).

So this gives us an idea of the players who might have been on the bench for Hungary. Probably someone from Gulyás, Józsa (goalkeepers), Simon, Jován, Lovász... Or even Híres, Lőrincz, Duró, Szeibert, Bánki, T. Balog (MTK). I wonder who it was.

I also have one question about Bicskei's line-up in this first qualifier against Spain. Róth played defensive midfielder in this match. I only know him as a central defender. Did Róth sometimes play defensive midfielder, or was this an unusual position for him?
  5. I am trying to find out as much as possible about Hungary's qualifiers for Italia'90, and right now I am trying to find out who were the three unused substitutes in this match, Hungary v Spain (11th October 1989).

I know that István Kozma (#12) and Imre Boda (#15) were substitutes, but who were the three unused substitutes? There is no info either here or on FIFA.com, so I am inquiring if any of you happens to know or perhaps could put me in contact with someone who might know? I would be very thankful for that information.

Was perhaps János Sass on the bench? Gyula Hajszán? József Duró? István Gulyás?

Thank you, HSV, this is very helpful. I can understand Mezey: The investigation put him under a very difficult situation as a national team manager.

There's still something I don't understand about the Hungarian team against Malta: Tibor Balog played forward next to Kiprich – but isn't Balog a midfielder? I know there are two Tibor Balogs, but both are midfielders, I think... Or was Balog a forward too? Otherwise, Mezey could have used Pál Fischer. Wouldn't Fischer have been a better choice?

Thanks. I would also like to ask: Did Mezey resign of his own will after this match, or was he sacked by the Hungarian federation because of the poor result in Malta?

And were there players who remained unavailable to the national team selection because of this investigation? For example: Sallai didn't play again for Hungary until September 1989, or was that because Kozma was seen as a better right back at the time?

I see. That's interesting. For what reason were these 100 footballers under suspicion by the authorities? I am curious, since Hungary suddenly turned up without so many key players in this vital match - and fatally only managed a draw.

Could anyone please explain (in English) why Mezey did not field several of his best players in this match against Malta? There were for example no Détári, Garaba, Bognár, Hajszán... I see that someone wrote below about some kind of "bundabotrány" and that some players were under investigation (?), but it would be nice to have this explained in detail.
