The Football Association of Wales are set to unveil a new design of their traditional crest.

FAW chiefs have voted to replace the current Dragon with a new stylised logo as part of attempts to give the organisation a new corporate identity.

The change means the end of the badge that was first established in 1951 – and proudly worn by players in Wales’ only World Cup appearance back in 1958.

Many fans will be disappointed to lose the iconic design, but FAW officials are hoping the crest will represent the start of a new dawn for the game in Wales.

The new badge sees 11 daffodils represent the 11 footballers around the edge of the crest, but sees the Dragon’s head turned to face forward to illustrate the directions the Wales side are taking, and will be introduced this week ahead of the Cardiff City Stadium clash with Bulgaria.

One FAW insider said: “We understand people are attached to the badge as it is, but the feeling was that it is time for a change.

“We have tried to remain faithful to the old design, but are trying to move forward as an association and this is part of that.”
The new logo will not appear on match shirts until the release of a new kit later down the line
